Knitting for Beginners

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Knitting, Tutorials Tagged With: Youtube Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

I learnt to knit years ago. My lovely Mum taught me. But when I haven’t done it for a while I need a reminder on how to get started again. A friend of mine commented to me the other day that she’s the same – just needs a little refresher course. So off I went to YouTube. There are videos over there for just about anything!

Here’s a collection of the knitting basics that I thought were easy to follow and helpful:

Casting on and basic knitting:

Purl stitch:

A couple of ways to decrease stitches:

How to increase stitches:

Casting off (or binding off):

If you’re left-handed, try this one:

All of these videos are by a website called Cyberseams.com. They don’t have any verbal instructions so make sure you close the ads over the bottom of the screen so you can read the tips that pop up there. Over at their website you will find more info on needles and yarn, understanding patterns and more videos. I’m hoping I can learn to knit more than just straight scarves!

Do you knit? How did you learn? Any tips for a beginner like me?

My Mum taught me to knit when I was a little girl. She must have been very patient! I only ever knit once or twice a year, so a quick refresher is a must. A few years ago I bought a Debbie Bliss knitting book in which she has a tutorial at the front. I couldn’t believe that I had been knitting a basic stitch incorrectly simply because I had forgotten! So it’s not like riding a bike, you do need to relearn sometimes. So thank you for this reminder.

You’re welcome. I hadn’t knitted for about 10 years before last Winter. It is such a good project to carry with me to kids’ activities though.

I learnt knitting at school, but today they don’t teach that anymore.
    Sadly…
But i don’t remember what we had to knit then.

My Mum was a teacher in the days when she taught pattern drafting at school. I certainly wouldn’t have learnt at school so I was lucky to have mum at home!

I was teaching knitting at the Knitters’ Guild stand yesterday and recommended YouTube several times. I’ve never seen those videos before though – perhaps because I dont’ need to learn to knit! 😉 They look excellent.

Isn’t the internet amazing! Literally everything is on there! I still remember my mum teaching me to knit and crochet when I was 7!

It is amazing isn’t it? I would have learnt around 7 too I think. Perhaps its time to teach my 7 year old…

This is great! I crochet some, but don’t knit. My grandma tried teaching me many years ago, but I didn’t care for it as much as crocheting. She and my mom both enjoyed knitting. I added this tutorial to a new page I started on my blog today: http://couponscraftsandcauses.com/crafts/crochet-and-knitting/.

    Have a great week,

    Kelly
