Do you mend clothes? Do you sew on buttons? Do you fix seams that come apart? Do you replace elastic that has lost its springiness? Do you put up hems on new pants or skirts? Today I seem to have a pile of those kinds of jobs waiting. They are not that interesting, but they do need to be done.
Not sure how to do some of those little jobs? I thought I’d collect some how-to’s for you for next time you need them.
Sewing on a button
This video has no voice over but written instructions at the bottom the screen as she goes along.
Putting up a hem
Great video! First it shows you how to hem dress pants by hand, then how to machine sew a jeans hem.
This one is another way to do a jeans hem without cutting off the excess.

Mending a split seam
Mending a seam is just sewing a straight line to join up the stitching again.
Replacing elastic
I couldn’t find a video for replacing elastic. Hmmm… perhaps I’ll have to have a go at making one myself but that would require learning how to take video and edit it. Maybe not! Instead I’ll take a few photos as I fix the elastic I have to do today, and I’ll write up a tutorial for you.
What other mending do you do? Or want to do? Can I add any other basics to this list?
