One of my Photo a Day challenge photos this week was a close-up of some quilting. I thought I’d share the bigger picture with you.
This little bag was made using a Moda Sweet Roll. A Sweet Roll is similar to a Jelly Roll (a set of fabric cut in 2.5″ strips) but the strips are narrower, only 1.5″ wide.
The real purpose for me at the time though was to practice my free motion quilting. I quilted along the strips using a wavy line with occasional hearts on it. You could easily use this quilting design as an overall design on a quilt by meandering more rather than going essentially down a line.
I have also quilted a similar design with flowers or loops instead of hearts. It’s an easy way to add a little interest to your free motion quilting. I’m no expert but I’m practising.
Do you do any free motion quilting? Any more suggestions of easy designs?

OMG…this is so incredibly adorable. I have bags on the brain lately. I have a two year old and up until now I never needed a diaper bag…but now that he is potty trained we need lots of extra shorts with us just in case. Something like this would be perfect. You are SO talented. 🙂

What a sweet bag and a great way to practice free motion. I’m still getting the hang of basic free motion but I have started using free motion on appliqué which is fun. A while ago I saw a quilt on Crazy Mom Quilts where she did a quilt as you go uing a different free motion pattern on each patch. Lots of ideas there. If I can find it again I will send you the link.

Your bag is really lovely! I’ve found the Leah Day tutorials on Youtube to be fantastic for free motion quilting ideas and lessons.

I’m and brand new quilter (like, one week!) and am still trying to get up enough nerve to try free motion quilting. I just bought the foot today for my machine, but I have to finish a quilt I’m hand-quilting for a new baby girl first. (My sewing machine was in the shop and I literally couldn’t wait till it was out to start quilting this panel. Soooooo……)
I just found your blog tonight, and will be reading it for any hints for a newbie! 😀
Thanks!
