Crafty Storage Ideas from Ikea

Somehow every crafter I know, whether they work with fabric or yarn or paper or paint or any other medium, always seem to be looking for new ways to organise and store their craft gear.

As a patchworker and quilter I have lots of fabric but there are also threads and scissors, rulers and cutting mats. For other sewing, add in buttons, zippers and ribbons. As a scrapbooker I have paper and card stock, as well as pens, adhesives and tools – and don’t even get me started on the embellishments! I have beads and wire for beading and jewellery making. I have embroidery threads, Aida cloth and linen for stitchery and cross stitch. I have yarn, crochet hooks and knitting needles. I have glue guns and paint. I have books and magazines on all those crafts and more!

So the process of storing all of that in a way that I can find what I want (when I want it) is constantly being revised.

One of my favourite places to get ideas? Ikea. Seriously. Not just a store full of furniture and storage items, but also filled with “rooms” where you can see the items in action and get ideas on how they will look in your room. (Although, I must admit that sometimes I wish some of my rooms were as pretty as their “pretend” rooms!)

I think what I like most about Ikea is that I often see things used in one room that I can imagine being used in lots of other rooms or ways. Since I’m always on the look out for craft storage, I often see ideas that I could use for my craft room.

Here’s a few examples to get you thinking…

There are wardrobe systems to use in your bedrooms, but I see the wire shoe racks and think of storing fabric in them so I could see it…

There are lots of boxes designed to go under beds (like this Antonius tub) but I see yarn storage without dust…

The kids storage is bright and designed for toys but I’d love to store paint and paper in those bright boxes…

There are lots of office solutions that would be fabulous in a craft room. Even the bathroom and laundry department has baskets and hooks that I can picture using for craft storage somehow.
