Winter PJs to Summer PJs

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Sewing Tagged With: Clothes, Kids, Recycled Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

Mr Happy’s favourite winter flannel pyjamas had a split in the knee. They still fit fine but the hole was getting bigger each time he wore them. He was not happy! But I had a brain storm: why not make the Winter pyjamas into Summer pyjamas? So here’s my recycled Summer PJs.

The pants were easy. I just chopped them off then hemmed the raw edge.

I had a T-shirt waiting for decoration so some fabric from the cut off leg became an applique for the front. The edges are trimmed with pinking shears to minimise fraying. I just pinned it in place then stitched around it a couple of times to hold it in place.

The hems of the pants are stitched 3 times just to look pretty. This was a 20 minute project but I’m really pleased with the results.

Mr Happy was so excited about these new PJs that he has worn them every night since I recycled them!

I didn’t mention that I found these while trying to clean up my craft room and decided to give up cleaning and just sew! It was much more rewarding ;o)

Great minds think alike!! My two boys (and girls!) have been putting holes through the knees of most long pants they have owned since they were about two (of course lots of those pants were hand-me-downs). If they can’t be patched, I’ve been cutting them (including pyjamas) down to shorts. Sometimes I have gone with the simple ‘frayed’ look (just snip the bottoms off with no hemming involved). Tracksuit pants have been cut off as long as possible and then ‘fringed’ (no sewing again – just like the fleecy fringed blankets you find around the place). One pair lately are irredeemable though, with a massive tear in the seat of the pants… I think I’ve already tried repairing them about three times! I think the fabric will get cut up and made into some soft flannel bags!

Love this idea….I took all the out grown and worn through winter pj’s and made a rag quilt for my little guy.
Next time I might try this. xx

A rag quilt is a gorgeous idea, too – something he will treasure!

What a good idea! And so simple to do. I really love the finished product! My husband get so attached to his clothes, it’s always a big story if I want to throw something out…

Same here, Rita. I think that’s where Mr Happy has learnt it from!

I shall have to suggest I do this for my nephews (my sister is non-crafty, so I get to things like this for her boys!)
