Time to share a little story…
Two weeks ago I went to pick my kids up from school as I do every day. I parked, walked through the park, chatted to friends as we waited, just like every day. The kids arrived and one had a drama so I popped in to visit her teacher, not quite an ‘every day’ thing but not so unusual. After that we set off to walk back to the car… and that’s when my ‘every day’ disappeared!
I fell. Maybe tripped, maybe just lost my balance, but I fell. I landed heavily on the concrete path on my shoulder. I knew it wasn’t good when I couldn’t move it. Luckily another mum appeared to check on me and take care of the kids and the Headmaster called the ambulance while I called my husband. An ambulance ride and some x-rays, and it appeared I had a clean break across the top of the arm. But after another opinion and a CT scan it turned out I had smashed the top of the bone pretty badly. Sigh.
So my ‘every day’ was followed by ‘surgery day’ and a few ‘couch days’. My shoulder now has some screws and a plate holding it in place with a sling for support and I’ve started physio to get the movement back as the swelling goes down. It still hurts but this morning I was able to walk my kids to school so it is starting to feel more like an ‘every day’ again.
That’s why the blog has been quiet. I haven’t been crafting or taking pictures or writing. I have been surfing social media with one hand on my phone a little but the time out has been unavoidable.
It might be a little while before I’m back online much. I’m taking things a day at a time. My husband has been amazing in picking up all the slack and juggling a million extra balls. I’m learning to do things with one hand, or to just be patient and wait until someone else can do things for me. We have had an incredible team of friends and family who have stepped in and helped with meals and kids and more. I’ve read two novels and watched plenty of TV. I feel some days like I’m achieving nothing, but I’m learning to accept that its ok to just rest and recover.
So that’s where I’m at. It could have been a really sad story with a much nastier injury, but it’s just a little bump with some recovery time thrown in. One of the upsides of ‘couch days’ is plenty of time to surf Pinterest so I’m storing up ideas for when I can use my hand again!
Update: I found a hairstyle I can do with one hand!! Yay! Read all about it and find the tutorial here.

Oh my…I’m so glad you weren’t hurt worse, but what a mess to have to go through. Thank heaven your family and friends have been such a help. I was out of commission for 7 weeks this past winter, starting on my vacation in MN with a week’s hospital stay, then another week to get some strength to fly home then 5 more weeks with my youngest son taking leave (Thank you Apple!!!) before I could return for work. Patience can be hard to come by, but it sounds like you’re mastering the skill of it…hoping your recovery is swift…best of luck!!!

Thanks you, Mitzi. I have days when I’m totally frustrated and just want to stay in bed, but thankfully those days are few compared to the positive days.

Thanks Emmy. I may have pushed a little hard today – my shoulder is feeling pretty sore this afternoon!

Thanks Anne. I keep trying to convince myself that I’ll be able to stitch or crochet in a another week or so but we’ll see…

Sending love, healing and understanding. I slipped on bean juice in the kitchen two years ago and broke my shoulder,a very similar break to yours. Rest well, so as the physio tells you and you will mend. Yes you will be frustrated, but all will be well
Tonya Grant says
Thanks Jen. It has been encouraging to hear a couple of stories from people who’ve had similar breaks.

Really feel for you, been there done that, best advice I can offer is: do just as you are told by physio and don’t push too hard for recovery, it’s been six months and only now can I really say I feel normal again

Many good healing thoughts sent your way. When I was younger and a seamstress I broke my right wrist in many places. Luckily a good surgeon put a device on me and pins in 4 different places. Still I am thankful that he went to school and learned how to repair broken bones. Now I have full movement, which he couldn’t promise me when he saw the broken areas. It was a long 8 weeks of recovery and my kitty was the best companion ever. Please know with all your heart you will soon be well as ever. Miss your wonderful blogs.
