Today I’m going to take you behind the scenes of The Crafty Mummy blog.
I’m sure you understand that what you see each time I write a post is only a tiny glimpse of my life and my home. That is deliberate, you know. I want to share the fun stuff and the pretty stuff and the creative stuff. You really don’t want to see my other boring stuff – like washing and mess!
But what you don’t know is that sometimes the boring stuff is just a little bit off camera!
As I was taking photos of the finished Rainbow Cross Stitch Blocks, I didn’t even need to pick up the library book lying on the floor. My basket of folding was behind me on the couch waiting for later and there were dishes in the sink across the room. Most days I can just clear a little space to take photos – thank goodness!
Here is my workspace at the moment. I’m trying out a standing desk set up with a bar table from Ikea. It sits nicely next to the running machine that I should use more often and my Ikea trolley fits perfectly underneath it. I have a couple of foam mats to soften the tiles and the power point is close by.
I’ve been working standing now for a couple of weeks and I love it. I was sitting A LOT of my days and it needed to change. I’m concentrating much more and moving around between tasks more which is better than the hours of sitting I was doing before.
Here is my sewing area. Unfortunately this room has no windows as it was designed as a media room in the centre of the house, but it is great for leaving projects set up or lying on the floor and hiding them behind the closed door! Sometimes I have my overlocker (serger) set up next to my sewing machine. It is packed away at the moment making room for a cutting mat instead. I’ve actually asked my Mum for a larger cutting mat for Christmas so that I can cut fabric even more easily with this set up.
You might be able to just see my piano on the left hand edge of the photo. It does not get played much as it is usually covered in piles of fabric! Once upon a time I was a piano teacher but these days my playing is limited to Sunday mornings in church.
One last glimpse of my work: some evenings are spent like this! An iPad… Pinterest… and a glass of wine! Yes, that is how I have built up over 17,000 followers on Pinterest – dedicated service to my fans in finding thousands of pins to share. {winks} So much fun!

Hi Tonya -First time i have commented on a site but i love what you put on yours and behind the scenes look very artistic to me as we have to have a few things on the go to do all the things we plan.

Lovely to see how your work space looks, no fancy office just a normal home. I also work from home and some days chaos reigns and there is stuff everywhere and then after a blitz…tidy but….we can’t find anything 🙂
I also have just started standing to work at my laptop and also for using my cutting mat, wonderful, no need to do back stretches just a simple knee bend now and again would advise trying it

How do you manage working at home Plus cleaning your home & meals. Its a struggle for me. I would like to make things to sell, but I find that if I am constantly trying to keep my home clean, then I have very little time to sew. If I sew & just keep the laundry up, other things go haywire. I have a disabled husband & 2 dogs to care for as well. I have discussed this with women from the quilt group that I belong to, they have someone coming in to clean their home, which I can’t afford to do. Would love to hear how you do it. I love the rolling cart from IKea. I gotta have one.

Hi Linda,
It is a constant struggle! I tend to have days when I really focus on one or the other – the crafting or the home. I’ve worked out that my most productive times for crafting or writing are in the morning, so whenever I can I ignore the mess and focus for the morning on writing and creating. Then in the afternoon I focus on the cleaning and cooking and washing. I also tend to squeeze jobs in while I’m doing other jobs – so I’ll be running loads of washing while I’m getting the kids ready for school, or in the evening while I’m cooking dinner. Then I can hang all the loads out at once later on. I also find I get more crafting done when I leave it set up somewhere so I can just sit down and do a few minutes here and there.
