Book Week last week got me thinking about crafts related to books. I’ve been a bookworm from a young age and have always collected books. I still have many of my favourite books from childhood and some special favourites, like ‘Where’s Wally?‘ in Japanese from my teaching days. We have a room in our home that we would love to turn into a library with floor to ceiling bookcases. (Just quietly, it is also the room with my sewing machine in it so the library thing may never happen!) I read every day and these days that is mostly on my Kindle. But I still love real books and encourage my kids to read them too.
My girl loves the Harry Potter books. She is especially wishing for the House editions recently. But I love how the Harry Potter series has encouraged a whole generation of kids to read more and created a cult following of fans. It is very cool that a book can create that kind of buzz.
The Harry Potter craze has spilt over into the crafting world too. There are lots of handmade items out there as well as lots of free patterns and tutorials to create one of a kind fan pieces. Today I have collected some Harry Potter inspired stitching projects. Some of these are free but there are also some that will cost you a few dollars for the pattern. All of them are created by small independent pattern makers so I think it is kind of nice to pay them for their hard work.

First of all some stitching work. This ‘Hogwarts is Home’ stitching is from Bev at Flamingo Toes. I love the way she has used a stitching hoop to display this one.

One of the most fun things about the Harry Potter series is the cool words that have been created – mostly for spells. Cross Stitch for You on Etsy has a captured some of these spell words in this cross stitch.
Like all good schools, Hogwarts has houses, house colours and crests. This Hogwarts Crest cross stitch is by Stitchering on Etsy and is also cross stitch.
This clever Harry Potter name is from 8 Bit Stitch on Craftsy. It incorporates lots of patterns and colours which have significance in the series.
