Origami Tips and Tricks

If you follow my Instagram feed or my Facebook page, you will have seen some origami popping up in the last few days. My friend B is running an Origami Challenge this month over at BBeingCool.com. Each morning she is posting a link to an origami tutorial, either video or written, and I’ve been making each one. This would be a great project for the kids each afternoon!

I love origami. Once upon a time I was a high school Japanese teacher and I would often throw in an origami folding spot if we finished our work a little early or on a Friday afternoon when we were all worn out. If you haven’t done origami before it is basically folding paper into fancy shapes. I thought I’d share my origami tips today.

My Tips & Tricks for Origami

  • If you don’t have square origami paper, don’t panic. You can easily create a square from rectangular paper. Fold one corner up so that the side edge lines up along the top edge of the paper. The triangle this creates should be a square folded in half. Just trim off the excess rectangle piece.
  • Fold origami on a hard flat surface.
  • Take care to line up edges carefully on each fold. Just a little bit of overlap can make a difference later on.
  • Make your creases as clean and sharp as you can – running your fingernail along each one will help.
  • Take it slowly and read each instruction carefully so you don’t miss any.
  • Have fun!

If you do make some, make sure you share them with the hash tag #coolorigamichallenge so I can find them.

I’ve never been into Origami, but my daughter loves it. She’s done it since she was really little, and she would get really mad when I would toss some of them out because they got to be way too many. I like your butterfly.
