ModernQAL Block 2: Spool

It’s June (where is the year going?!) and that means time for the next block in the And Sew We Craft Modern Blocks Quilt Along (#ModernQAL). This month I’ve chosen the Spool Block which looks like a spool of thread. You will find it on page 174 of the Modern Blocks book and it was designed by Krista Fleckenstein. With a little searching I discovered that Krista writes a blog called Spotted Stones which I can’t wait to explore some more.

But on to the block. I chose this block because I knew that I wanted to show off my feature fabric. When I was choosing fabric for this project, this print of paper dolls was the print that I matched all my other fabrics to. The Spool block lets you show off a special fabric with a nice big piece of it. The example in the book uses a dark background, but I’ve chosen a white-on-white background for mine, just as I used in my first block and plan to use throughout my quilt.

Here are the pieces that you will use to create this block. It is really quite a simple block with all straight seams.

Cutting

  • Feature fabric: 6.5″ x 6.5″ square
  • Ends of the spool: 2 rectangles: 1.5″ x 8.5″
  • Background:
    • 2 strips: 3.5″ x 6.5″
    • 2 strips: 2.5″ x 12.5″
    • 4 pieces: 1.5″ x 2.5″

Sewing

  • Lay out all your pieces so you can keep track of where they go.
  • Join the outer rectangles to the inner pieces to create full rows. Use quarter-inch seams throughout.
  • Press the seams open or towards the darker fabric.
  • Join the five rows together to complete the block.

I’m glad, Jodie. i hoped we had a picked a good mix of not-too-hard blocks so anyone could join in. You can always leave out the blocks that you aren’t happy with from your finished quilt ;o)

That’s a great way to showcase a larger print and a good modern take on the spool block. Thanks for sharing.
