Stitching Tip: Organising Threads

embroidery threads from kit

Today I want to share a quick tip that I have found helpful over the years. Often when you buy embroidery or cross stitch kits, they come with all the threads but no way to store them. I have found that this method of organising threads helps me store them safely without getting them tangled and saves me time later in my project. I sort them once and work out which colours are which and then my labels mean I don’t have to work out all the colours again later.

What You Need

  • a strip of cardboard – anything will do as long as it is clean, e.g. the side of a cereal box
  • a hole punch – you can see we used a cute flower punch for this one but a standard punch is fine
  • a pen or pencil
  • your threads and kit instructions

What To Do

  • Sort all your thread into colours – often there will be more than one strand of some colours.
  • Punch the same number of holes as your number of colours in your card.
  • Attach the threads to your card – I fold them in half, push the loop through the hole in the card, then put the ends of the threads through the loop and tighten.
  • Label each thread beside the hole with the symbol from your kit chart. You could also add the name of the colour and the number if you have them.
