Jelly Roll Quilts from Craft Retreat

Each year at Creative Craft Retreat we offer some classes. The past couple of years I have taught patchwork quilting classes (you can see the pictures here and here). This year the class was taught by Di from Quiltitis. She taught a jelly roll race quilt with a little twist.

These quilts have been around for ages and are the perfect project for a weekend. The three ladies in the class were very excited to have created a quilt top in a weekend. This was achievable mostly because they started with jelly rolls. Jelly rolls are sets of about 44 strips of fabric pre-cut to 2.5″ inches wide. With that cutting already done, they could immediately start joining them together and create a quilt quite quickly.

Di has then created a little difference by slashing her design with a couple of bands of fabric through the middle of the strips, and flipping one of the jelly roll pieced pieces updated down.

I love how the three different quilts turned out! Just the different mix of fabrics make them such different quilts. But they are all beautiful! None of them look like they were made by beginners, and know of other ladies who were on Retreat who are now saying that they wished they had taken the class as well.

If you’d like to have a go at one of these, you can find a basic jelly roll race quilt here: Missouri Quilt Company on YouTube

The ladies made their jelly roll race quilts as per the video then sliced them twice to create the narrow piece. Some of them then flipped the thin strip before sewing everything back together along with two narrow strips to separate the sections. The narrow strips could be jelly roll strips joined together but in this case they were narrower than 2.5″.
