Quick Lacy Crochet Wrap

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Crochet, Tutorials Tagged With: Sponsored, Tops of 2015 Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

This is a sponsored post for Nuffnang and Spotlight.

Friends who know me well and follow my Instagram will notice that I started a new project over the weekend –  quick lacy crochet wrap.

Yes, another new crochet project.

Yes, my husband rolled his eyes a little. (He is not a crochet lover. I don’t understand. Sigh.)

But I couldn’t resist trying this yarn from Spotlight and I figured it would be perfect for that in between season that we are about to go into when it is warmer for most of the day but just a little bit chilly as the day is ending. With our afternoon activities I find myself just starting to get a little too cold as we are waiting for the end of the dance class so I just need quick wrap to throw around my shoulders.

I had admired Lorelei’s hot pink shawl at PBEvent last weekend and in the back of my mind the idea of making a shawl or wrap with cotton rather than wool so see me into Spring had been growing. When I got the chance to browse in Spotlight, I checked out all the yarns and found Moda Vera Elenna. It is a mix of acrylic and cotton, and although it has no ply marked on it, the website says it is 12 ply. It is nice and chunky so it crochets up quickly.  The weight is similar to the My Boshi yarn that I’m using for my Rainbow Heart Blanket.

You could just as easily crochet this wrap in a fine soft yarn for a pretty evening wrap, or in wool for a snuggly addition to your Winter wardrobe.

After looking at a bunch of tutorials, pattern and pins I had collected on my Crochet Tutorials & Inspiration Pinterest board, I decided to have a play and make up a pattern. It is similar to some that I saw but very simple. It only uses three stitches: chain, single crochet (SC) and slip stitch.

See how start and do chain stitch at this post I wrote for And Sew We Craft.

See how to do single crochet here:

To slip stitch, do the same as Single Crochet – insert hook and yarn over – then pull through both the loops so you are left with one loop on the hook.

What You Need

Moda Vera Elenna yarn – 50% acrylic/ 50% cotton, 100g balls

Size 6 crochet hook

I used 8 balls of yarn in four colours:

Aqua (Colour 10) 3 balls

Denim Blue (Colour 11)  2 balls

Chocolate Brown (Colour 15)  1 ball

Stone (Colour 02)  2 balls

Note: If you are shopping via the Spotlight website (did you know you can shop online now? Yay!) be careful of the colours – there are lots to choose from but it can be tricky to work out which names match which photos and the small squares beside the names are not necessarily the colours of the yarns. There are photos of only 6 colours but lots more colours listed by name. Looking at their colour list I’m guessing my four are Aqua, Turquoise, Brown and either Beige or Taupe.

Finished Size:  The pattern allows for variation but my wrap is 30″ x 70″ (76cm x 178cm)

What To Do

Quick Lacy Crochet Wrap:

Foundation Row: Chain until as wide as you want wrap in multiples of 5. Turn your work. My foundation chain was 90 stitches.

Row 2: Count back 10 and single crochet (SC) into the 10th stitch.  **Chain 5 and SC into the 5th foundation chain.** Repeat from the ** to the next ** until you work your way to the end of the row. It will look like a series of big loops. At the end of the row, SC into the last chain, then chain 5 and turn your work.

Row 3: Count back along the first loop to find the middle stitch of the 5 chain. SC into that stitch. **Chain 3 and SC into the same foundation stitch – forming a small loop. Then chain 5 and SC into the middle stitch of the next large loop.** Repeat from the ** to the next ** until you work your way to the end of the row. It will look like a series of big loops and little loops. At the end you’ll find a loop of 10 here we started the 2nd row. SC into the top of the third stitch then chain 3 and SC again. Chain 5 and turn your work.

Row 4: **Look past the small loop to the larger loop and find the middle stitch of the 5 chains – SC into the top of that stitch. Chain 3 and SC into the same stitch. Chain 5.** Repeat the section between the ** all the way to the end of the row. Finish the row with a 3 chain loop and then 5 chain and turn your work.

Continue to repeat as for Row 4 until your wrap is as long as you want it.

See how to had a new ball of yarn or change colours here.

Final row: When you’ve done as many rows to make the length you want for your wrap, you can finish with a final row of chain to make a straight edge: Slip stitch into the top of the small 3-chain loop then chain 5. Repeat all the way across the row. When you have slip stitched into the last small loop, chain 3 and slip stitch into the 3rd stitch of the 5 chain then finish off.

Finally weave in the ends where you have changed colours.

I changed colours a number of times, each time at the end of a row. You could use variegated yarn to changed colours instead.

I did this many rows of each colour in mine – Total: 85 rows

Aqua   12 rows (including the foundation chain row and row 2)

Denim Blue   4 rows

Stone   12 rows

Chocolate   8 rows

Denim Blue   7 rows

Stone   12 rows

Chocolate   3 rows

Aqua   6 rows

Denim Blue   3 rows

Aqua   17 rows + final chain row

Note: I’m a newbie when it comes to writing crochet instructions so please let me know if something doesn’t make sense and I will try to word it better. Please be kind!
