Crochet Rainbow Granny Blanket

rainbow granny square

I was going to wait until I had finished this crochet rainbow granny blanket to share it but I just can’t wait!

Every time I put a little glimpse up on social media people ask questions about it so I feel mean not sharing more information with you.

It really is a super simple blanket to make and great for a beginner.

rainbow yarn

My yarn is a gorgeous rainbow variegated yarn from Cleckheaton called California 8 ply in colour 5791 “Circus”. I bought it at Spotlight. I’m using a size 4 crochet hook.

The pattern is a very simple granny square that just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each round. The rainbow yarn means I don’t need to change colours so I just join the next ball in wherever I am when I run out. I have seen this type of blanket done in blocks of colour too or with colour changes for each row so it is up to you.

This tutorial on YouTube gives you a great step-by-step how to if you’ve never made a granny square before.

rainbow granny yarn

I made mine just like this one with double crochet clusters of three, but I did three chain in each corner, and only one chain between clusters along the sides. Alternatively this tutorial from Daisy Cottage Designs uses only one chain in the corners and one chain between clusters so it really is up to you. Just make sure you do the same thing all through your blanket so that it all looks the same.

I bought about 6 balls of yarn when I was shopping with no project in mind, so my plan is too see how big my blanket is when I’ve used all the yarn. If I want it bigger at that stage, I’ll probably add some plain yarn in one of the colours to create a border.

Which colour would you choose?

Good idea, Jodie. Black would look great with the jewel tones in the yarn I think

I totally love the yarn you are using! Is it as soft as it looks in the pictures and was it a current stock line at Spotlight? I’ve very tempted!!!!

Yes, Karen it is super soft, and although I bought mine last year, I’m sure I saw some this year as well in Spotlight
