Cool Origami for Kids

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Crafts Tagged With: Origami, Papercrafts Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

Origami is a favourite at our place. Mr Happy has been known to spend hours folding paper and getting his creations just right. I have a couple of origami books that I bought years ago when I lived in Japan and he has worked out that he can follow the pictures even though he can’t read any of the Japanese characters! So I shouldn’t have been surprised when he chose to buy an origami book while we were travelling in Japan last year.

What struck me as amazing in the origami section of the Japanese bookstore was the array of books that were based on other pop culture icons. Tsum Tsums were everywhere we went and so Mr Happy chose an origami book to fold Tusm tsums – Disney Tsum tsums. So cute!

P.S. If you don’t know what a Tsum Tsum is, click here.

This prompted me to go on a quest to find more origami books for folding popular characters or items.

The Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger was already a favourite at our place. There are 8 books in this set and each one is perfect for my ten-year-old. There is a story to read with characters loosely based on the Star Wars characters who get up to crazy adventures. At the back of each book it shows you how to fold the origami characters, and even has links to videos on his website with tips and tricks. So cool!

You can also find another origami Star Wars book here:

Another popular series in our household is Pokemon. This book looks like a very cool addition to our library. It includes full instructions to fold 10 Pokemon characters and special paper. Finding paper can be tricky here in regional Queensland so I love o see origami books that include paper. This is definitely going on our wish list.

Superheroes are always popular and I have written about folding them before. This book is for creating 46 superheroes from DC comics including superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and the Justice League, all from squares of paper. The sheets of paper are included with all the detailed illustrations to make each hero come to life. I actually think my brother might like this one more than my son!

Another cool book by the same author, John Montroll, is this one for creating dragons and other creatures in origami. The designs are super intricate to really challenge kids or adults. Each of the 27 models have full instructions and a story woven throughout the book.

Finally one for the fashion designers, a whole book of folding dresses and outfits. This book includes 30 origami designs with instructions – enough to create a whole wardrobe. This is one that I want to buy for myself!

Origami is a favourite at our place so I've gone a quest to find cool origami books including Star Wars, Tsum tsum, superheroes and pokemon.
