Layer Cake Pop Quilt

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Quilting Tagged With: Fat Quarter Shop Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

I’ve such a lovely day of sewing! I waited all week for my fabric to arrive and luckily it arrived yesterday afternoon. It was actually the Australia Day holiday here down under, so I spent the day creating this gorgeous quilt just in time to share it for the release of the Layer Cake Pop Quilt pattern and Quilt Along.

I can tell you firsthand that it is indeed possible to make this entire quilt top in one day.

Not one to do things the easy way, I decided to use the Dixie Fat Eighth Bundle from the July 2016 SewSampler Box rather than the suggested Layer Cake. You can see my cutting below to get two sets of pieces from each fat eighth. This fabric is so pretty it made me smile all day. I found my tiny 2.5″ square by Creative Grids was perfect for cross cutting all those squares.

My white background fabric was a white jelly roll of Bella Solids. I think I need to just keep one of these permanently in my fabric stash because I so often am looking for white background fabric. The jelly roll made cutting super quick and easy, of course.

Once all the cutting was done, this was a great project for chain piecing.

I listened to “Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia” on Audible while I pieced the first section – it seemed appropriate on Australia Day. Then I switched to “Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World” for a bit, before finally listening to “Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain” when my boy came to join me for while in my sewing room.

Do you listen to something or watch TV while you sew?

But back to the sewing…

I really love how this quilt top has come together. The pattern is easy to follow with clear diagrams and instructions that make sense. I think I especially like how the blocks create a secondary design of stars once they are joined.

You can find more info about this pattern over at the Fat Quarter Shop blog, The Jolly Jabber, here.

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this pattern so I could create my quilt to share with you. Thank you, Fat Quarter Shop folks!

Wow! I am so impressed that you were able to get the quilt top pieced in a day. The pattern really lends itself to chain piecing and I love the fabrics you chose. 🙂

I love that you used the fat eights from the Sew Sampler box. I was just wondering what to try with that fabric and I think I found a winner. Your quilt is beautiful.
