What craft books would you buy?

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Crafts Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

I’m doing my Christmas shopping and considering buying some books online. Do you shop for books online? The prices are usually as good as a “real” store, often better, and the postage is usually pretty good too. The only thing I don’t like is not being able to flick through them first and make sure they have projects I’ll want to try.

Here’s where you can help me!

What books do you have on your bookshelf that you go back to again and again? Which ones have projects that catch your eye each time you flick through them? I like lots of crafts so I’d love to read your recommendations for sewing, quilting, Christmas crafts, home items and kids crafts – or crafts generally!

Of course, I have some books that I always go back to as well. Here’s my favorites (affiliate links to Fishpond so you can shop too)

Jelly Roll Quilts: The Perfect Guide to Making the Most of the Latest Strip Rolls

I keep going back to my quilting books by Pam & Nicky Lintott (I have three different ones) and I’ve loved everything I’ve made from them. There are plenty of pictures and the instructions make sense.

Weekend Sewing: More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching

Weekend Sewing has a mix of sewing projects for home and family to suit various skill levels. I have made a couple of projects from this book and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. One day soon I’m going to make the skirt on the cover!

Bend-the-rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew

I tend to sew things by intuition rather than always follow the rules so this book appealed to me. Some of the projects are super easy, but I find sometimes I don’t need the perfect project as much as the inspiration. I’ve learnt some basic techniques from this book too.

So help me out: What are your favourite crafty books?

I’ll be watching this post. I have a huge list of sewing books i’d like but am hesitant for the same reasons – i can’t flick through them. The 2 above are on my list & i think they look like keepers. I’d just like to start with a beginners overall type sewing book & i’m finding that hard enough.

Do you use bookdepository.co.uk? They have great prices and free postage to Australia.

I must admit I don’t, Lynne. We’ve had a couple of bad experiences with them – books arriving damaged or not at all.
