Table Runner Ideas

Christmas table runner patchwork

We put up our Christmas decorations this afternoon. The kids love putting all the decorations on the tree, and CraftyDaddy and I love watching their faces as they “discover” what is hidden in each box.

One of the items that came out of storage was the table runner that I made last year. I like having a runner on the table, and this one matches the red place mats that I use every day. It also matches the bunting that I made a couple of weeks ago – which is now decorating our big glass doorways.

If you don’t have a table runner for Christmas, they can be quite quick to run up. If you find a fabric you love you can simply cut to size and hem it. If there are a couple of fabrics you love, why not try some simple piecing?

Here’s a few ideas to get you started…

strip pieced Christmas table runner

{strip piecing by with simple straight line quilting}

Christmas mug rug

{this is a mug rug tutorial but you could use bigger squares and make it rectangular for a runner}

chevron Christmas table runner

{chevrons or zig zags – easier than they look}

chevron table runner Christmas

{more chevrons, but these run the length of the runner}

Christmas tree applique table runner

{simple applique shapes and a subtle stripe – love this one!}

Christmas tree table runner

{I love how the white background of this one is like snow behind the trees}

birds stars Christmas table runner

{stars and a dove – love the quilting on this one}

I must tell you, some of the blogs that I found while looking for these table runners were added to my reader. There are so many talented crafters and quilters out there! See more table runner ideas at the Flickr group called Modern Christmas Table Runner Swap 2011.

    I loved this post about table runners! I was in a funk, without an idea in my head (but wanting to make a number of holiday runners with not tons of holiday fabrics!) and now I have several really beautiful choices. I especially appreciate that there were so many links for us.
    I did a quick detour and voted too!

      Glad it was helpful, Elizabeth! After finding them all, I want to make a new one today.

      And thanks for voting too

    Some great runners! Thanks for the links – there are several I’m going to look at!
    I’ve voted for you again! How are you getting on?

      Thanks, Gill.

      I’d love to say all the voting is getting me to the the Top 25 but alas, the competition is fierce, and I suspect it is not going to be.

    These all look lovely! I’m turning into a bit of a “gunna do” 🙂 but I think surely I could manage one of these. Esp the second one which looks like a quilt as you go. Thanks for sharing these. X

    I particularly love the applique trees one, and the ‘bunting’ type one below it! Have been meaning to make a Christmas table runner for a while now, and this might be just the inspiration I need!
