Behind the Scenes

I take a lot of pictures of the items I make. Some photos appear here on my blog. Others appear in my Store. I thought I’d share with you my latest photo prop. You may have noticed a few photos lately with a pretty white doily in the background.

Here’s what I’ve been using:

doily cardboard background photo

That’s right: a large sheet of card board (about $2 from the newsagent) and a paper doily (from my cupboard, but in packs from the supermarket for very little). So simple, but it just gives a little interest in the background of the picture.

I usually lay my sheet of card on the floor next to a window where there is plenty of light.

Ideas:

  • You could easily use a different coloured card or doily
  • You could use a vintage or handmade doily – it’s original colour or dyed
  • A piece of cute fabric – gingham is always cute
  • A bedspread or sheet

Things to remember:

  • Choose a colour that doesn’t clash with your item
  • Neutral backgrounds (white, black, cream, etc) can be used for any item you need to photograph
  • The key to getting a great picture is the light
  • If using a fabric as a background, think about the size of the print in relation to the size of your item – you don’t want the item being “lost” among the print, so make sure the print is smaller or larger

Where do you take your photos? What do you use as the background? I’d love more ideas!
