Kids: Beaded Necklace

beaded necklace

My poor Little Miss pulled a muscle in her neck. She spent the day yesterday walking around with her head tilted to one side, looking very uncomfortable. Poor thing!

She amused herself quite happily with puzzles and games in a sunny spot on the couch for a while. Finally she decided to make a necklace. She pulled out her containers of beads – thanks, Grandma M! – and within half an hour she had created her masterpiece. So pretty! The thread is coloured elastic and the fastening came with the kit.

If you want to get your kids started on beading, there are lots of inexpensive beading kits around like this one.

My Tips:

  • Look for kits that come with everything they will need – beads, threads, fastenings – so they can get started right away.
  • Look for a variety of beads – different shapes, colours and sizes.
  • Beads with letters on them can be educational as well as fun.
  • Think about storage. Beads can be a choking hazard for younger kids so teach older kids to put their beads away. Perhaps invest in a box with compartments like this one to store them safely.

What do you do with them after they are done? We have SO M ANY after the kids make a lot and I don’t want to throw them away but I do get overwhelmed with all the creations!

Hmmm… maybe they can be like artworks from school: you get to keep the most recent ones only if you get rid of older ones? They could be gifts for all their friends and relatives!

What a cute little necklace! My crew love watching me bead, I think I need to get some children’s bead sets and they can join in. I hope she’s feeling better soon.
