Planning a Doona Cover

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Sewing Tagged With: Kids, Quilt Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

Kids bedding is so much fun! Bright colours. Great prints. Cute accessories. Fun!

But sometimes you can’t find just what you’re looking for in the stores. That’s where I come in. I’m planning a doona cover for a lucky little boy. (For my international readers, a “doona” is what we call a “duvet” here is Australia. It is a type of fluffy bedding that requires a cover, like a pillow slip goes on a pillow. Sometimes it is also called a continental quilt.)

I started with this cute robot fabric in the colours that were requested – green, blue, orange and yellow. I had this one in my stash so I headed back to Spotlight for some coordinating fabrics. I’ve ended up with solid green and blue, and spotted yellow and orange.

Here’s my current plan. I used Skitch to draw a large rectangle in the dimensions of a standard single bed quilt, then added smaller rectangles. I started off thinking of strips but I would have had to join fabrics to get the width so I decided to mix and match the strips. This allows me to spread the patterned fabric across the design.

Next I can use my drawing to calculate the size of each of the rectangles and start cutting. If you’re thinking of making one yourself, don’t forget to add the seam allowance to each block. I’ll use a quarter-inch seam just as I do in quilting. I’ll also add a couple of inches extra at one end to accommodate the closure of the cover with press studs. My backing will be solid white.

Here are the standard dimensions of quilts and doonas from an Australian bedding website.

Look out for a progress report when I start sewing!
