Quick and Easy Gift Bag

by Tonya Grant |Filed Under: Sewing Tagged With: Bags, Gifts Get a Weekly Update of all Articles

I was up early on Sunday. Not by choice. {sigh} But since we were up, the kids really wanted to watch the cartoons which left me with an unexpected opportunity to sew – yay!

I really wanted to have a go at the gift bags from Kelly at Em Ay Kay Ee. Kelly did a whole series of tutorials using a charm square pack to make a tote bag, sunglasses case, key chain decoration and more last year that I loved, so I was sure this new tutorial would be great too.

It was easy. Her instructions were clear step-by-step with pictures and animated gifs. (How do you make those, Kelly, because I was really impressed by them?) I wasn’t very adventurous with the fancy stitching like she had done. I just did zig zag. But next time I’d probably have a go.

So by breakfast time I had a bag done. What a lovely way to start my day!

Edit: I found Em Ay Kay Ee was at www.kellyrachel.com but it seems to be broken at the moment so I have removed this link
Edit: I have searched and searched for another copy of this pattern but this is the closest I could find: http://www.craftstylish.com/item/6295/origami-purse

Oh, and you asked about the animated gifs. I made them with Photoshop CS5. If you have Photoshop, there are a few good tutorials out there for making them. It’s really easy!

Thanks, Kelly. I use Picasa for photo editing but I may have to invest in Photoshop soon.

Very nice – and all before breakfast!
May I ask – how big is it?

The bag is 6.5″ across the width and about 7.5″ without the handle, Lynne. You could carry a book in it or give a small gift in it.

      Hi Karen,
As I wrote at the end of this post, the pattern seems to have disappeared from the Net along with the gorgeous blog I found it on. This is the closest similar pattern I’ve been able to find: http://www.craftstylish.com/item/6295/origami-purse
      Hope this helps,
      Tonya

Howdy do. 🙂 I just had to comment about the Kelly site. I had all the tuts for the whole set FOUR years ago. At that time there were 2 sisters/friends? involved and not at any of the sites you listed (can’t even remember now). After a major hunt online, I finally gave up.

Altho I had the whole sets tuts, my computer died along with all but one tote bag I had put on a disk. I LOVED her/their stuff but have no idea what happened to her/them. Just nice to know I wasn’t losing my mind and someone else had lost the site(s) too.

The tote tut I have is bare minimum and not even a pic of the finished product. I kind of lost my desire to try it, but intend to some day soon.

    Just FYI 🙂

I too have been searching for this tutorial…I made one, LOVED it, and planned to make more, never thinking it would disappear! I have just found it using the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20111007090330/http://kellyrachel.com/blog/2011/06/02/one-fat-quarter-gift-bag-tutorial/. However, I’d recommend saving it somewhere because I’m not sure how long that link will work! Hope this helps someone else out there!
