I’m trying to get my head around Christmas being just around the corner, and it got me thinking about Christmas colours. I’m a traditional girl and I tend to gravitate towards traditional Christmas colours – red, forest green and gold. But I notice lots of other colour schemes in trees and decorations. I took a stroll through my local Myer and snapped a few picks of colour scheme ideas.

Do you have a colour scheme for your Christmas decorating? Are there particular colours you avoid, or think are just “not right” for Christmas? I still don’t really like the white trees. We don’t have snow here in Australia for Christmas and white trees remind me of snow, so they just don’t seem quite “right”. On the other hand, I have seen some beautiful ones.

We try to have a colour theme at the table and in the dining area but the “live” tree is decorated with baubles from my childhood and those collected during our 34 years of marriage, plus tinsel in every colour of the rainbow. The presents are always wrapped in the economical Christmas paper that comes on rolls at the chain stores – no theme there. The loungeroom is decorated with tinsel and decorations (from my childhood etc) in every colour so no theme there either.
One of our Chrstmas traditions is to go the food hall at David Jones, the Christmas departments in Myer and David Jones in the city, and of course to see the wonderful window displays at DJs.

I put lights on the bushes outside our house. There are about 13 boxwoods that circle with our porch. One year I decided to change up things and put on blue rather than white…people in town wondered what was up with that? I think it’s fun to try different things. I like the one with all the jewel tones.

My daughter has done the decorating the day after Thanksgiving since she was 3 or 4, as she got older she wanted different colors, so we currently have plastic boxes with ‘red Christmas’ ‘green Christmas’ ‘blue Christmas’ and ‘gold Christmas’ lucky for me she has never tried some thing weird. The color changes happen with the tree lights the tree garland and the tree skirt, the Christmas Ornaments are always the same, I used to work at Macy’s and always bought the Hallmark ornaments, they all have years on them and all mean something, and then there are the Handmade ornaments done by the kids through out the years. Christmas is the only thing we decorate for in our house.
Sounds gorgeous, Sonia. We usually only decorate a tree too, but I put a nativity scene on a high shelf and this year I’m making bunting.

Hi Sonia. Bunting looks like little flags on a ribbon so you can hang it up to decorate.
I had to do a search. I’ve seen those decorations, didn’t realize what they were called.
