Padded Seat Belt Cover

Here in Australia we have pretty strict laws about kids and car seats to keep them safe. This is fine with me as I’ve heard plenty of gruesome stories about what can happen to kids in car accidents. My Little Miss (9) has finally moved out of a booster seat now that Mr Happy (almost 7) is getting too big for the seat he was in. So now she is travelling with only the seat belt that goes over her shoulder. She is excited to be growing up, but she complains that the seat belt rubs on her neck. So I decided to try to make it more comfortable with a padded seat belt cover.

I love it when a project turns out just as I imagined and this one was easy! The cover is a couple of rectangles of fabric with a layer of iron-on pellon between them. I added a little quilting and some velcro to hold it in place.

The hardest bit of this project? Getting some photos of it in the car!

Little Miss is so cute though: “You could sell these in your Shop, Mum”, she tells me.

Hmmm… good idea! Would you buy one? Should I add some to the Shop?

Looks great! All my kids are still in either boosters or car seats. And hopefully I can keep Caden in his booster for at least another year.

I would just LOVE to make or buy one of these for my Mother for Mother’s Day! Do sell them or the pattern? She is ALWAYS complaining about having to wear her seat belt and I am sure THIS would settle the disputes we have every time I have to take her some where! It would definitely improve our relationship! 🙂

      Hi June,
I could certainly make one for you and pop it in my Shop. Is there a particular colour or pattern you’d prefer?

I am SO sorry it has taken me so long to write you back!! I tried to look in “Your Shop” to see if I could find one of those padded seat belt cover- but I could not find one. I tried to make one from your “SEAT BELT COVER TUTORIAL”- but trying to figure out the padding, what kind of padding, and size of the cover… I made a huge mess and the only thing I helped pad was my cats as they cuddled up with the padding and fabric I had flying EVERYWHERE! My Mom is disabled and I have to drive her to all her doctor appointments and anywhere else she wants to go. She WILL NOT wear her seat belt (which drives me INSANE, plus it is the law, and it is there for her protection )- plus the seat belt buzzing every 5 minutes, which I do not think she hears, drives me nuts! 🙂 Ever since I saw your posting about the padded seat belt cover I have been SO ANXIOUS to find or make one for her. I JUST saw on your tutorial that you shared your Padded Seat Belt Cover. Are they both the same size? Any help you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated! I really need my Mom to be safer in the car while I am taking her somewhere. It is hard enough to get her out to begin with and when I do, all she does is complain about the seat belt and refuse to put it on! I appreciate all your help and taking the time to hear me out… and come up with something that could help my Mom!!
        Sincerely,
        June Hearn
