Tutorial: Felt Triangle Coasters

Triangle Coasters Set

Time for a little Christmas tutorial! I’ve been slow to start with the Christmas preparations this year and we still haven’t put our tree up but I have done a little crafting.

Add some merry and bright to your decor with these triangle coasters – felt triangles that create a hexagon when you fit them together. These are made with felt which is great to work with as it won’t fray. The stitching is quick and simple – or you could make yours more elaborate if you get inspired!

What You Need

  • Felt – 30cm x 60cm (if you use this tutorial to cut them, you’d need two strips 11.5cm wide and about 50cm long)
  • White thread – I used Sashiko thread but you could use Perle Cotton
  • Needle – sharp with a large enough hole to fit your thread
  • Scissors, or cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Paper
  • Free Triangle template – click here and print

What To Do

1. Cut 12 triangles from your felt. The triangles are 60 degree triangles which means all the angles are 60 degrees. I created mine using this process, and used strips that were 11.5cm wide. If you’d rather use scissors, use the template.

2. Next you’ll need a triangle of paper the same size as your felt triangles. You could print one using my template, use the template you’ve already printed, or cut one in paper using one of your felt triangles as the template.

3. Fold the paper triangle in half three times creating three folds, one from each point to each straight edge. (See picture above.)

4. Then use the lines to fold the paper as in the picture just above. This is going to be your guide to do your stitching without having to draw all the lines.

5. Thread you needle with a length of thread and knot the end. Use your paper template to find the middle of the triangle and bring your needle up at the centre point.

6. Stitch three long stitches – about 1cm long each – pointing to each of the points of the triangle. use the paper guide to line them up. Come up in the centre again to start each stitch.

7. Then add three more stitches to your “star” shape by doing three stitches in the middle of the first three stitches. These shorter stitches are about 0.5cm. I just added these “free hand” – it doesn’t have to be perfect. Finish your thread with a small knot.

8. Now grab another felt triangle and add it on the back of your stitching. Join the two triangles by running stitch around the edge. Hide the knots in between the two layers of felt.

Make 5 more and you’ll have a lovely set of triangle coasters that creates a hexagon in the centre of your table when not in use.
