I was so excited (or maybe “sew excited”?) to finish this mini quilt last week. It has been in my To Do pile for a little while now and each time I pick it up I think how much I love rainbows on black again. I’m calling this one the Rainbow Star Mini Quilt.

rainbow star mini quilting

I shared earlier in the year how I made the star from rainbow jelly roll strips and a black jelly roll for background. Both of these strip sets came from Quilty Box, a fabulous box of quilting fabric and notions that arrives on my doorstep each month. I haven’t used a lot of batik fabric before but I love rainbows so I had o find a project to use this batik strip set. My ‘go to’ for background fabric is usually white but rainbow brights really ‘pop’ when used with black as the background.

Look at the quilting on this mini quilt. The design created black diamonds within the star. I quilted these using the method I learnt in a video class I took on Craftsy called Dot-to-Dot Quilting with Angela Walters. I created smaller diamonds within the black diamonds without marking the lines. I just used the points and joins on the quilt to decide where to pivot. It is not perfect but it was great practice. I think mini quilts are always a great place to try new techniques like this.

I also quilted around the outer edge of the star, staying about a quarter inch away from the coloured shapes. Then I quilted three lines on the inside of the rainbow border and two lines outside the border. Again I didn’t mark these lines. I just followed the seams and kept my sewing machine foot about a quarter inch away from the seams.

The backing fabric was one from my stash in black and white, and the binding was made from the scraps of my stars. Look out for a scrappy binding tutorial next week.
