Crochet Granny Rainbow Blanket Finished

I seem to go through times when I start lots of projects and other times when I finish lots. Lately seems to be a finishing time. I had a number of crochet blankets on the go last year that I put aside when it got too warm to have them in my lap on th couch in the evenings. So as we got colder weather again in the past few weeks, I was able to get them out again.

I shared recently the Rainbow Heart Blanket with its rows of white and rainbow colours. Today I have another rainbow blanket finish – my Crochet Granny Rainbow Blanket.

I started this rainbow blanket when I went to the Problogger Event last year. I always try to have a project with me at events like this where there is a lot of sitting and listening to speakers but a large blanket is too awkward to work on in rows of seating. So I grabbed some gorgeous rainbow yarn that I had stashed and started something new. I first shared it here on the blog in this post: Crochet Rainbow Granny Blanket, and on Instagram before that.

The yarn is Cleckheaton California 8 ply in colour 5791 “Circus” from Spotlight. I used a size 4mm or G hook. The outer border is Moda Vera Mawson yarn which is a little thicker than the California but the best colour I could find to finish off the blanket. I used 6 balls of yarn for the rainbow section and another 5 balls of Mawson for the border.

You can see in the pictures that the border is a little wavy. This is due to using a slightly thicker yarn for the border section. I’m hoping that when I block it that waviness will be reduced so I’ll let you know. In the meantime, it is only noticeable when it is spread out flat for photos!

This pattern is super easy as it is just a granny square that keeps growing until you have it as big as you want it. I made mine with double crochet clusters of three and one chain between clusters, then three chain stitches at the corners. The benefit of using the variegated yarn for this one is that you don’t have to change yarns to change colours. You can just crochet until you reach the end of the ball of yarn then attach the next one, but still end up with a colourful rainbow blanket.

You can find a video tutorial here:

I have one more blanket on my UFO (unfinished objects) pile in green and chocolate. I’m working on the border now so look for that one soon – hopefully. You might also spot a new ripple blanket I started last night on Instagram – I know! I couldn’t help myself!!

I was inspired by this afghan, and bought some Cleckheaton California in a colour-way called Stoem – ranges from purples through to lime green. I finished it with a scalloped edging in one of the colours (sort of pinky-purple). I entered it in our local show (Whittlesea) this last weekend, and won first prize in the Rug – any yarn – more than 1.5 m square (Crocheting), and Best Article Crochet. I was very pleased with myself.
    Thanks for your inspiration.
