Crochet Spiral Decoration

Pinterest. My ultimate time waster. But also the source of so much inspiration!

This week it was crochet. I came across a fabulous crochet tutorial from Youtube by eliZZZa13 that just made me want to have a go straight away. Hubby thought I was mad when I immediately went searching for yarn and hook in the middle of a movie!

The result? This crochet spiral decoration in Christmas red and green. Mine is a little different to the original tutorial so here’s what I did:

What You Need

  • 8 ply yarn in red and green
  • Size 4 crochet hook
  • Scissors

What To Do

  • Start with the red yarn and chain 20 stitches. Think of these 20 as called Chain 1, 2, 3 and so on.
  • Skip Chain 1.
  • Into Chain 2 work 4 single crochet.
  • Into Chain 3 work 4 single crochet.
  • Into Chain 4 work 4 single crochet.
  • Into Chain 5 work 4 single crochet.
  • Into Chain 6 work 4 half double crochet.
  • Into Chain 7 work 4 half double crochet.
  • Into Chain 8 work 4 half double crochet.
  • Into Chain 9 work 4 half double crochet.
  • Into Chain 10 work 4 double crochet.
  • Into Chain 11 work 4 double crochet.
  • Into Chain 12 work 4 double crochet.
  • Into Chain 13 work 4 double crochet.
  • Into Chain 14 work 4 double crochet.
  • Into Chain 15 work 4 treble crochet.
  • Into Chain 16 work 4 treble crochet.
  • Into Chain 17 work 4 treble crochet.
  • Into Chain 18 work 4 treble crochet.
  • Into Chain 19 work 4 treble crochet.
  • Now you’re back at the top of your chain and your spiral should be curling as you go. Cut the red yarn and join the green yarn. (You can read how I do that in this post.)
  • Work one single crochet into the top of every stitch in your spiral.
  • At the bottom of the spiral chain one, then turn and work one single crochet into each stitch all the way back to the top.
  • I finished with a chain of about 10 for hanging my decoration.

Crochet terminology can be confusing! I’m using the US terms. See the conversion chart here.

Hi Tonya, I love your spiral Christmas ornament! I’ve made some using white size 10 crochet thread and a size 7 hook for snowy spirals or icicles to hang on the tree. I’m thinking of making some with the crochet thread that has the gold or silver thread running through it. Thanks again! ~ Dawn ~
