For as long as I can remember this doily has been on a small table somewhere in the living room. The living room at my parent’s house, that is. It usually had a vase in the centre, sometimes with fresh flowers that Mum or I had received for some special event. I can remember Mum starching all the handmade doilies. On this one it made the ruffle stand up nicely.
My Mum taught me to crochet when I was in primary school. Her mother crocheted, too. So did her grandmother – my great grandmother.
This is a piece of my “crochet heritage”. It was made by my great grandmother for my mother. I look at it now and realise it must have taken her ages to create. It’s made in Perle Cotton and the stitches are tiny. The finished circle is about 50cm diameter. Mum has looked after it carefully and it is almost perfect still.

I love the fact that you’re taking the time to catalogue the crochet heirlooms in your family while you have ‘elders’ still around to tell you about them! That’s beautiful.
There are some that the details are sketchy for already so I’m glad I asked now. It seems a shame to lose those memories.

My grandmother crocheted a lace tablecloth ( in 4ply, I think) for my engagement and a bedspread (8ply) for a double bed for our wedding. She did the same for my sister. Somewhere along the way we swapped tablecloths (I have the larger table now). I still have the bedspread (no longer in use as we have a queen bed) and my mum has my sister’s bedspread on the bed in the guest room. WM and I had only one child, so she will inherit both the bedpread and the tablecloth (which is used on special occasions).

I’m in Love!!! I love the ruffled doily. May I have the pattern or information about the name of it. I have crocheted since high school. This brings back memories. I made one years ago for my aunt, but not as beautiful as this one. Please may I have the pattern so that I can make one for myself. Thanks, Iris
