It’s not too late to whip up some gifts for the kids this Christmas. So I’ve put together my top 10 ideas, with a few links thrown in for good measure!
1. Pencil cases – Quick and easy to whip up, pencil cases don’t have to just be for pencils.
- Boys love to have a pouch for their cars.
- You can make them the size to fit a game or pack of cards.
- Teens can use them to store their iPod or electronic games.
- Add a set of blocks or small books for a baby.
- Little girls love to carry around small dolls or jewellery.
- Big girls can store their jewellery too – or make-up.
2. Clothes – Skirts and shorts are fairly easy to sew, and they can be teamed with a store-bought T-shirt in a coordinating colour with an applique of matching fabric on the front. For those of you in Winter, how about scarves or a poncho?
3. Blankets and quilts – If you don’t have time to sew or quilt one, why not buy a length of polar fleece and applique a couple of shapes or pictures onto it? The edges won’t fray so you don’t even have to hem them!
4. Bags – Kids can never have enough bags – for their treasures, library books, ballet class, swimming gear, visiting Grandma’s house or shopping with Mummy.
5. Dress-up clothes – Some clothes are perfect for play!
- bride veil
- capes for kings and queens
- superhero capes and masks
- fairy wands and wings
6. Dolls and accessories – Lots of sites have free patterns for Barbie and other dolls’ clothes, or make tiny bags and blankets that match your child’s room.
7. Card cases – I often give the teens in our extended family gift cards, so a card case is the perfect addition to that gift. They can use the case for their bus pass or library card later.
8. Indoor toys – Bean bags and soft frisbees can be played with inside. Car mats or train mats are perfect for little boys, while softies can be for younger kids. Fabric mazes can be popped in a bag for taking in the car.
9. Bookmarks – We always include a book as a gift for our kids. As they get older, bookmarks are starting to become necessary too. There are lots of easy ideas out there from felt to paint chips to fabric.
10. Run out of time to sew?! Shop for handmade on Madeit or Etsy then and just pretend you’ve been crafty! {wink, wink}

Yes; I have completed two of four cloth books made from commercially printed panels. I also hope to paint a car jigsaw if WM can get it made in time! I was going to make a “fuzzy felt” type car too but think I’ll wait till Older Grandson is a bit older – he is obsessed with cars at the moment!

I have a boy obsessed with cars here, too. He “smuggles” them to school in his pockets! Sounds like you’ve been very busy.
